Canadians throw out 1.6 billion disposable cups every year
This linear system of extracting limited natural resources to create single-use products destined for the landfill or the oceans is damaging the environment. The disposable cup has become such a norm in our culture today — what can we do to fight it?

The issue of cup waste is complex and requires many different strategies to tackle it. Today many businesses have switched to recycled paper cups or biodegradable cups. Some governments have charged fees on disposable cups. Some organizations have even started cup-sharing programs. One classic strategy we don't see being leveraged enough is encouraging customers to bring their cups to buy their to-go drinks in.
We’ve all heard about "bring your own cup" but why hasn't this strategy been widely adopted?
While many shops are incentivizing Bring Your Own Cup (BYOC) by offering small discounts to customers, we see a bigger potential. We created BYO.

​Hooray! With the BYO app you can reduce waste and combat climate change by supporting tree planting. Trees provide many positive benefits on our health and our planet. Trees have the ability to produce oxygen, remove pollutants from the atmosphere (including carbon dioxide), and benefit wildlife. Just like the cup waste issue, climate change is a complex issue that will require many different solutions. Tree planting is one of them.
